WHERE THE GAP COMES FROM
The gap isn't about effort. It's about recognition.
You're already doing the work that keeps businesses compliant and finance teams running. Without the title to match, three things stand between you and the income that should follow.
Reason 01
You're doing skilled work. The recognition hasn't caught up.
Reconciliations, VAT submissions, payroll, management reports — none of this is data entry. But without a recognised title, your work gets priced like it is. The guide shows you how to position your skills and price them properly.
Reason 02
Your scope keeps growing. Your salary doesn't.
You started preparing trial balances. Then full statements. Then budgets. Then strategic insights for management. Same job title. Same salary. The guide includes scope-tier templates so growing responsibility means growing income.
Reason 03
Your scope keeps growing. Your rate doesn't.
You started with bank recon. Then payroll. Then SARS submissions. Then management reports. Same fee. Same salary. The guide includes scope-tier templates so growing responsibility means growing income — not extra unpaid hours.

WHO STANDS BEHIND THIS
Built by the body that champions every accountant, at every level.
This guide isn't generic advice. It's built by CIBA — the Chartered Institute for Business Accountants — using insights from designated members who earn R190,000 more a year on average.
CIBA is recognised by SAQA, SARS, and CIPC. The Chartered Bookkeeper (CBK) designation is our entry-level professional credential — built for the people who are the foundation of every great finance department.
Bookkeepers with the CBK designation aren't "just" capturing numbers. They're meeting national professional and ethical standards. Employers and clients know it — and recognise it.
WHAT CIBA MEMBERS GET
A recognised professional title
The CBK designation — the national standard that signals you do work above data capture.
Practice tools and templates
Engagement letters, fee guides, reconciliation checklists, SARS submission templates.
Continuing professional development
CPD built for finance practitioners — tax updates, software training, compliance changes.
Technical support
CIBA's helpdesk for VAT, payroll, and reconciliation queries when something doesn't balance.
SARS, SAQA & CIPC recognition
CIBA is recognised by all three. The CBK designation carries weight where it counts.
THE EARNING CEILING
What a Chartered Bookkeeper earns.
Recognition plus pricing skill. Here's where designated bookkeepers typically sit across their career.
CIBA-designated members earn an average of R190,000 more per year than non-designated practitioners doing equivalent work.

FROM A CBAC MEMBER
"Before CBK, I was 'the admin girl.' Now clients and my boss call me the bookkeeper, and they mean it."
— NOMSA, CBK
DO YOU QUALIFY?
The CBK has three requirements. If you've been keeping books for a year, you likely meet all three.
The bar is intentionally accessible. CBK is built to recognise practical bookkeeping work — not gatekeep it.
NQF Level 4 Qualification
A recognised qualification at NQF Level 4 — typically your matric (National Senior Certificate) or an equivalent vocational qualification. If you finished school, you likely meet this requirement.
Req. 01
Req. 02
12 Months Relevant Experience
Twelve months of practical bookkeeping or accounting work. If you've been processing invoices, reconciling accounts, running payroll, or supporting an accountant for a year — you are already there.
Req. 03
Mathematics and Accounting
Both Mathematics and Accounting as school subjects, or equivalent through a recognised institution. CIBA can guide you through alternative pathways if you're missing one.
